This is a tondo Adoration of the Child. Madonna and little Jean-Baptiste collect above Jesus looks at us. The movement of its members reflects the restlessness of childhood, while the golden haloes and downcast eyes recall the tragic fate that awaits this child. The rocks of the landscape can lead to combine the scene at the first meeting of Jesus and John the Baptist in the wilderness. The "Madonna and Child" sitting by nature, is a pattern developed by the Florentine painters in the late fifteenth century. Leonardo, Giovanni Bellini and especially Filippo and Filippino Lippi in gave examples. The tondo Petit Palais is close to "The Virgin Adoring the Child", painted by Sandro Botticelli to 1480-1490 (Washington, National Gallery): the unstable posture of the child is the same and the gesture of folded hands of the Virgin American is similar to that of John the Baptist.

The history of this picture is uncertain. He would have remained in the collection of an old Florentine family, before Charles Vincent Ocampo acquired it from Jules Feral, in the early twentieth century. He donated it to the Museum of Fine Arts of the City of Paris in 1931, subject to usufruct. The latter was lifted in 1942.
