The Landwehr, founded in 1808 by the two archdukes Karl Johann and formed the first Militia Austria. All wehrbaren men 18 to 45 years had to engage to military service. Excluded were clergymen, noblemen, officials, dignitaries, citizens, artists, tradesmen owners and farmers. Thus, especially the poor rural population has been committed. but many came voluntarily to the military service. was defeated in the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, when Napoleon, the militia played an important role. In the same year paintings also Krafft was born. The artist shows here a militia man who just breaks away from his wife and children to draw with his comrades in the war. The protagonist is stylized as a hero because he is willing to sacrifice his life for his country. Instead of a subject to paint from the history of the imperial family, to Krafft decided to depict a scene from the present. Thus, the artist turned against propagated by Füger classical art direction. What is striking is the presentation of the emotions in this genre-like paintings. The family is concerned and sad, while the Landwehr man is about to resolutely striding away. The painter is interested in a realistic representation of the people. He also tried to show credibly the interior of the farmhouse. Through the monumental format, the political-propaganda effect of the painting is clear. [Catherine Lovecký 6/2010]
