Earlier falsely called "Motta di Taormina". In the 1840s Waldmüller began to study nature in the sunlight. This was an opportunity to travel in the summer of 1844 to Sicily. During a several-week stay in the eastern part of the island, he painted the mountain town of Mola, also called Castelmola which is located on a rocky cliff in 550 meters above sea level above Taormina.
