This sketch was done to prepare the self-portrait from 1853 preserved at the Uffizi Gallery. The painter Hippolyte Flandrin (1809-1864) seeks to follow in the footsteps of the Florentine Renaissance artists such as Sarto. Portrant a toque of black velvet, it is seen three-quarter.
In 1853, Flandrin is in full glory of his election to the Institute and at the time of major project of St. Vincent de Paul, which captures the attention of all the criticism.
