This small painting is a study for the large portrait of the Comédie-French; Gerome executed it from documents, Rachel had died between control his portrait, made by his sister, and his execution. Gérôme was able to inspire Amaury-Duval Table (1854), exhibited at the 1855 Salon, possessed Émile de Girardin.
