The "League" is the name given during the religious wars in a party that was given the task of defending the Catholic faith against Protestantism. After the death of Henry III (1 August 1589), the "League" vigorously opposed the arrival of the heir to the throne, Henry IV, Prince Protestant. Many spectacular events combining monks, soldiers and children took place in Paris between 1590 and 1593. Only the conversion of Henry IV to Catholicism in 1593, was able to appease the spirits. Many painted versions and an etching Petrus Koerius widely disseminated the event.
