Two men and two women are in a domestic Dutch burghers. On the left, a woman sitting in profile looks with a tranquil air a long haired officer who makes a cup filled with wine that has just paid a young man behind them. The woman is wearing a velvet cloak lined with fur, earrings and a small cap held by a bun. His hands are resting on his knees. A young woman wearing a white satin gown profile also standing next to them. The decor is reduced to the essential: a box bed, a table on which there are a few valuable items and a mirror and a trunk. A similar remark sobriety in the colors, where black and white predominate.

Various interpretations have been given to this painting, as indicated by the current title, would be an engagement scene. While the bridegroom raises his glass toward the chaperone, the white satin dress bride standing at his side. The characters used models were identified from other works of Ter Borch. This would involve members of the family of the artist, his younger brother Moses Ter Borch, in the role of servant and the wife of the painter in that of a female.
